PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is India's largest residential rooftop solar scheme, launched in February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The scheme aims to install solar panels on 1 crore homes across India, enabling families to generate their own electricity and receive up to 300 units of free power every month.
What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
PM Surya Ghar Yojana provides Indian homeowners with direct financial subsidies to install rooftop solar panels. The government has allocated ₹75,021 crore for the scheme, making it one of the largest clean energy investments in Indian history.
Under the scheme, homes can generate solar power for free daily consumption and sell surplus electricity back to the grid through net metering - effectively receiving credit on their electricity bill.

- 1 kW system: ₹30,000 central subsidy
- 2 kW system: ₹60,000 central subsidy
- 3 kW and above: ₹78,000 central subsidy (maximum)

PM Surya Ghar Yojana in Uttar Pradesh
In UP, the scheme is implemented through UPPCL (Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited) and local DISCOMs including LESCO (Lucknow), PVVNL (Pashchimanchal), MVVNL (Madhyanchal), and others. Lucknow-based applicants apply through LESCO, which has an active team processing net metering connections.
UP also has its own UPNEDA Solar Policy which may offer additional state-level benefits over and above the central subsidy - making UP one of the best states in India to go solar in 2026.
How Much Can You Save?
A family using 300 units per month with a 3kW system could eliminate their electricity bill entirely. With UP residential rates now at ₹7–9/unit in 2026, that's ₹2,100–₹2,700 saved every month, or ₹25,200–₹32,400 per year. Over 25 years, total savings can exceed ₹9 lakh - from an investment that costs just ₹1,07,000 after subsidy at today's prices.
Why Act Now?
The PM Surya Ghar scheme has seen overwhelming demand - over 2.8 crore registrations as of mid-2026. Subsidy funds are allocated state-wise and can be exhausted. Applying early ensures you lock in the current subsidy rates before any policy revision.
